The iconic Steelmen statue, a symbol of Joliet Central High School's rich history, is embarking on a transformative journey. This beloved statue, crafted by the talented Louise Lentz Woodruff, has stood proudly since 1935, embodying the school's spirit and academic prowess. However, as part of the T&I Building Link construction project, it is temporarily bidding farewell to its familiar spot.
What makes this story particularly fascinating is the intricate process behind its relocation. The statue, a masterpiece of white-bronze, was carefully disassembled and moved to a secure project space within the Pathways Building. This meticulous approach ensures its safety during the restoration process, which will be led by local artist Dante DiBartolo, known for his community-focused artistic endeavors.
DiBartolo's expertise in statue restoration, coupled with his connection to the school, makes this project a significant undertaking. His previous work includes murals at Joliet Township High School District 204 and the Transition Center, showcasing his dedication to preserving local history. The artist's involvement adds a layer of personal significance to the statue's restoration, as he was also the model for the ROTC mural on the teacher's lot wall across from the school.
The Steelmen statue's journey began at the 1933-34 Chicago World's Fair, "A Century of Progress." It represented the sciences of astronomy, botany, chemistry, geology, mathematics, medicine, physics, and zoology, accompanied by eight bas-relief panels. Its arrival at Joliet Central in 1935 marked a new era for the school's athletic teams, who adopted the "Steelman" name, becoming one of the most recognizable symbols in Illinois high school athletics.
