Scientists have discovered a fascinating and potentially concerning bacterial mystery within the enigmatic pygmy sperm whales, one of the ocean's least understood mammals. These whales, known for their deep-sea hunting habits and elusive nature, have revealed a hidden health issue that could have broader implications for marine life and ocean health.
The study, published in the Journal of Wildlife Diseases, highlights the discovery of three novel Helicobacter genotypes in pygmy sperm whales, marking the first time these bacteria have been documented in this species. Named Kogia Helicobacter 1, 2, and 3, these bacteria are associated with gastrointestinal disorders in humans and other animals, including chronic gastritis, ulcers, and even gastric cancer. The presence of these bacteria in a deep-diving whale species is particularly intriguing.
The research, conducted over 20 years, involved examining post-mortem samples from 59 pygmy sperm whale strandings. In four cases, scientists found spiral-shaped bacteria within stomach tissue, which were later identified as the novel Helicobacter genotypes. Two of these genotypes, K. Helicobacter 1 and 2, are genetically similar to known Helicobacter species found in other cetaceans and humans, while K. Helicobacter 3 belongs to a more divergent lineage, suggesting the possibility of many undiscovered marine bacteria.
The infected whales exhibited clear signs of gastrointestinal disease, including gastritis, gastric ulcers, fibrosis, and nematode infestations. While Helicobacter wasn't listed as the cause of death, the repeated presence of these bacteria and associated lesions raises questions about their role in chronic illness. The study emphasizes the susceptibility of whales to microbial infections, which could have significant implications for individual whale health and entire populations, especially vulnerable species.
The findings highlight the importance of long-term marine mammal stranding response programs. Without these efforts, the discovery of these bacteria might have remained hidden. This research underscores the value of studying stranded animals over decades, as each whale's story can lead to groundbreaking scientific discoveries and a deeper understanding of ocean health and the interconnectedness of marine life.
